Homeshool Day

Looking for an exciting, fun-filled, curriculum-based field trip designed with homeschoolers in mind? Shawnee Town 1929 Living History Museum is the place to visit.

Join us on our farmstead and in our town to experience family and small town community life in the 1920’s. The program is designed for first through fifth graders but students of all ages and their families are welcome.
At our farmstead, students will plant seeds or pick produce, wash clothes with a washboard, churn butter, feed our rooster Duke and his hens, prepare vegetables for market, learn the biology of plants from seed to market to table, tour our farmhouse, and maybe even dance the Charleston played on our farmhouse’s phonograph!

In our town, do a lesson straight from a 1920's reader or look at how the world has changed on a one hundred year old map at Harmony Schoolhouse. Take orders, stock shelves, learn about paying on store credit, and how advertising brought greater consumer awareness at Garrett's Grocery Store. Students will have an opportunity to pay two bits for a shave and a haircut, shine shoes, see 1920's hair styles, and learn about the increasing role women began to play in business at Bousman's Barber Shop and Yotz’s Typewriter Repair Shop.

Learn about the booming business of automobiles at Fisher’s Chevrolet Dealership and Murphy’s Service Station, our two new buildings at Shawnee Town opening 2019!

View the lesson plans under School Visits for detailed activity information, related Kansas History, Government, and Social Studies standards, pre- and post-visit worksheets and puzzles, historical photographs, and more!
