Be a part of Shawnee History: Shawnee Town volunteers bring local history alive. Whether they are dressed in period attire and demonstrating butter churning, singing carols during Christmas Around Town or helping us record and store artifacts, volunteers help tell the story of Shawnee’s past.

Opportunities Include:

Townsfolk Volunteer - Mid-March through May, late September through October; training provided, ideal for educators, history buffs and thespians. Volunteers dress in early 20th century attire and demonstrate period activities like churning butter and fingerprinting suspects in the Marshal’s office to help bring Shawnee history alive for school groups.

Stitch-in-Time Sewing Circle - Year-round; lots of fun for those who can sew and have an interest in historic attire. Volunteers help design and sew early 20th century attire for museum's historical interpreters who recreate Shawnee farm life from 100 years past.

Speaker Series Regents - Apr-Oct, 2nd Tuesday of the month, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm; perfect for friendly, organized volunteers interested in history & education.  Regents help with set-up, welcoming guests, registration and clean-up during historical speaker series evenings when experts talk on subjects of historical relevance to early 20th century farm and town life.

Museum Ambassadors - Year round; training provided; terrific for outgoing, organized folks with data entry and phone skills.  Greet visitors, answer phones, assist in museum shop, data entry, filing, records.

Historic Collections Assistants - Year round; training provided; perfect for history buffs.  Assist Curator of Collections with data collection, research and care of artifacts.

Old Shawnee Days - Early June; ideal for outgoing volunteers who enjoy the local history and traditions. Help decorate, welcome visitors, demonstrate early 20th century farm life & clean-up.

Shawnee Town Craft Fair – 2nd Sat of Sept; If you like crafts and festivals you’ll love volunteering at this fair featuring more than 100 artisans and food vendors. Help prepare the booth spaces, assist with registration, direct parking lot traffic, help pack & clean up and more. Volunteers get free admission and a reserved parking lot.

Historical Hauntings - Last Saturday in October, evening; a great fit for volunteers who enjoy helping families celebrate Halloween Help decorate, greet, pass out candy, assist with hayrides, judge costumes, clean-up.

Christmas Around Town - First Saturday in December, early evening; fun for friendly volunteers who enjoy the holiday season. Help decorate, welcome visitors, assist with sleigh rides, help the storyteller, be a Santa elf, clean-up.

How To Get Started

Here’s how to get started as a volunteer for Shawnee Town:

  1. Fill out and hand in a volunteer application form (pdf)
  2. Call or come by for an interview with the Museum’s Volunteer Coordinator to meet the staff and find the opportunity that’s right for you.
  3. Attend an onsite orientation program – call (913) 248-2360 for a schedule of available dates. At the orientation volunteers will be asked to read and sign a Shawnee Town Volunteer Guidebook. Background checks will be performed on all Shawnee Town volunteers.

  • All volunteers must complete a volunteer registration form and review the guidebook.
  • We think of Shawnee Town volunteers as part of our museum family. Therefore, like staff, volunteers are expected to behave and dress professionally and appropriately when they are working with us.
  • Youth volunteers from age 5-18 are welcome. If youth volunteers are under the age of 12 they must be accompanied by an adult and able to perform the duties listed in the job description.
